Course Description
Electrical substations are essential elements of power transmission and distribution networks. Their primary function is to facilitate the efficient transfer of electrical energy from generating stations to end users by adjusting voltage levels and controlling power flow throughout the system. In a typical power system, electricity is generated at relatively low voltages and then stepped up to high transmission voltages to minimize losses during long-distance transmission. Substations located along the transmission network then step the voltage down again for distribution to industries, commercial facilities, and residential consumers. In addition to voltage transformation, substations also perform critical switching and protection functions. They isolate faults, control network configuration, and provide measurement and monitoring capabilities. Because substations are central nodes in the power system, their design must emphasize reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
