Conceptual Microgrid Designs for Energy Resilience
Course Description
A microgrid is a localized energy system capable of operating either in connection with the main utility grid or independently. Its primary purpose is to enhance energy resilience by maintaining reliable power during outages or disturbances in the main grid. Microgrids combine distributed energy resources, such as solar, wind, or biomass, with controllable loads, energy storage, and an Energy Management System or EMS. The EMS acts as the brain of the microgrid, balancing supply and demand, predicting load requirements, and optimizing operations in real time. Think of a microgrid as a small, self-contained ecosystem that ensures essential services remain uninterrupted, even during emergencies.
