Design Options for HVAC Distribution Systems
Course Description
HVAC distribution systems are responsible for delivering conditioned air or thermal energy to occupied zones within a building. While the central plant generates heating or cooling, it is the distribution system that determines how effectively that energy is utilized. From a design perspective, these systems directly influence thermal comfort, indoor air quality, and energy consumption patterns. Broadly, HVAC distribution systems fall into three categories: air-based systems, water-based systems, and hybrid configurations. Each has distinct performance characteristics and cost implications. In modern building design, system selection is no longer purely technical - it is driven by energy codes, sustainability targets, and lifecycle performance expectations. Poorly designed distribution systems often result in uneven temperatures, excessive energy use, and occupant discomfort, even if the central HVAC plant is correctly sized.
