HVAC Hacks - Module 9 Hydronic Heating & Cooling Design - Essential Tips & Rules of Thumb
Course Description
Hydronic systems are based on a simple yet powerful principle: using water as a medium to transfer heat. Water has a very high specific heat capacity, which means it can carry a large amount of thermal energy with relatively small temperature changes. This makes it far more efficient than air for heat transfer. In a typical hydronic system, water is heated or cooled at a central plant-such as a boiler or chiller-and then circulated through a network of pipes. As the water flows through heat exchangers like coils or radiators, it transfers energy to or from the surrounding air. One key advantage of hydronic systems is that they operate in closed loops, which minimizes losses and allows precise control. Unlike air systems, which require large duct spaces, hydronic systems use compact piping, making them more flexible in building design.
