Course Description
In situ thermal remediation, or ISTR, is a method of treating contaminated soils and groundwater without excavation. The fundamental principle is the application of controlled heat to volatilize, mobilize, or chemically transform contaminants in place. This approach is particularly effective for persistent organic pollutants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, which are often resistant to conventional biological or chemical treatments. Advantages include minimal surface disturbance, faster remediation compared to excavation, and applicability in complex site conditions. However, challenges such as high energy consumption, subsurface heterogeneity, and high upfront costs must be considered. This first part of the course focuses on the basic principles, mechanisms, and an overview of thermal remediation techniques.
