Overview of Portable Fire Extinguishers: Selection, Use, and Maintenance
Course Description
Welcome to Module 1, where we will establish the foundational knowledge required for all subsequent learning in this course. To effectively select and use a portable fire extinguisher, you must first understand the nature of fire itself. At its most fundamental level, fire is a chemical reaction, and for it to occur and sustain itself, four essential elements must be present simultaneously. This concept is known as the Fire Tetrahedron. The four elements are heat, which raises the fuel to its ignition temperature; fuel, which is the combustible material that actually burns; oxygen, which typically comes from the ambient air and acts as the oxidizing agent; and an uninhibited chemical chain reaction, which perpetuates the combustion process. Fire extinguishment works by removing one or more of these tetrahedron elements. Understanding this model is critical because it dictates why certain extinguishing agents work on certain fires and why others do not. Building on this chemical understanding, we must then classify fires based on the type of fuel involved. The National Fire Protection Association, through its standard NFPA 10, establishes five distinct fire classes. Class A involves ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, and many plastics. Class B involves flammable and combustible liquids and gases like gasoline, oil, grease, paints, and solvents. Class C involves energized electrical equipment such as motors, transformers, wiring, and computers. Class D involves combustible metals like magnesium, titanium, and sodium. Finally, Class K involves cooking oils and fats in commercial kitchens. Understanding fire classification is the foundation for correct extinguisher selection. When you encounter a fire, your ability to quickly and accurately identify its class will determine whether you select the correct extinguisher or make a potentially fatal error.
