Pre-Coating Surface Preparation
Course Description
“If you have 10 minutes to paint a fence, spend 8 minutes preparing the surface and 2 minutes painting.” Key fact: Over 80% of premature coating failures are due to inadequate surface preparation, not the coating material itself. For lubrication (e.g., solid film lubricants on gears/bearings), poor preparation leads to delamination and metal-to-metal contact.
What you'll learn in this course?
Explain why surface preparation accounts for 80% of coating/lubrication system performance.
Identify and classify common surface contaminants (oil, mill scale, rust, old coatings).
Select appropriate surface preparation methods (solvent cleaning, abrasive blasting, water jetting, acid pickling) based on substrate material and service environment.
Interpret surface cleanliness standards (ISO 8501, NACE/SSPC, Sa 2.5 vs Sa 3).
Measure surface profile (roughness) and assess its effect on coating adhesion and lubrication retention.
Apply quality control checks (solvent wipe, chloride test, dust rating) before coating application.
