Course Description

Contaminated lands are areas where soil, groundwater, or surface water have been impacted by hazardous substances due to past or ongoing human activities. These contaminants may include petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, solvents, or pesticides, depending on the historical land use. Such contamination can pose significant risks to human health, including exposure through ingestion, inhalation, or dermal contact, as well as ecological risks affecting plants, animals, and water systems. In many urban areas, the increasing scarcity of undeveloped land has led to a growing interest in redeveloping these contaminated sites. However, without proper remediation and risk management, these lands remain underutilized. Addressing contamination is therefore essential not only for environmental protection but also for enabling sustainable urban development.

Prerequisites

• Basic understanding of environmental engineering, property development, or land management

• Familiarity with environmental assessment and regulatory terminology is helpful
