Sediment Properties and Their Influence on Geotechnical Behavior
Course Description
Sediments are the building blocks of soil systems, formed through the continuous breakdown of rock material over geological time. In geotechnical engineering, almost all natural soil deposits we deal with are sedimentary in origin. What makes sediments particularly important is that they are not engineered materials; they are naturally formed and therefore inherently variable. This variability is what makes geotechnical engineering both challenging and intellectually interesting. Their behavior is governed by a combination of particle size, shape, mineral composition, and the environmental conditions under which they were deposited. Understanding sediments allows us to interpret the ground as a historical record of geological processes, which in turn helps predict how it will behave under engineering loads.
