Course Description
Small wind electric systems are designed to generate electricity for individual homes, farms, or small businesses. Unlike utility-scale wind farms, which may produce several megawatts per turbine, small wind systems typically range from 400 watts to 100 kilowatts. Most residential applications fall between 1 and 10 kilowatts. These systems operate on a simple but powerful principle: converting the kinetic energy of moving air into rotational mechanical energy, which is then converted into electrical energy via a generator. From a sustainability perspective, small wind systems reduce reliance on fossil fuels, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and offer energy autonomy - particularly valuable in rural or unreliable grid regions. However, unlike solar energy, wind energy is highly site-specific. Success depends far more on location than on equipment selection alone.
