Types of Foundations
Course Description
Foundations are the most fundamental component of any civil engineering structure because they provide the essential link between the superstructure and the ground. Their primary role is to safely transfer loads from buildings, bridges, or retaining systems into the underlying soil or rock in such a way that neither shear failure nor excessive settlement occurs. In geotechnical engineering, this interaction between structure and soil is complex and highly variable. In retaining structures, foundations must perform an additional function: resisting lateral forces generated by soil pressure. This makes their design more demanding compared to conventional vertical load-bearing foundations. A properly designed foundation system ensures stability, minimizes differential settlement, and enhances the long-term performance of the structure. Failure at the foundation level is often catastrophic, which is why geotechnical investigation and careful design are critical.
