High energy arcing faults, or HEAF, are sudden and severe electrical events characterized by the formation of an electrical arc carrying extremely high currents. These arcs can occur between phases, between a phase and ground, or across multiple conductors, releasing massive amounts of energy in the form of heat, pressure, and light. The consequences of HEAF are often catastrophic, including extensive equipment damage, fires, explosions, and severe injuries to personnel.
