Alternating current, or AC, is a type of electrical current in which the flow of charge periodically reverses direction, in contrast to direct current, which flows in a single direction. AC is the standard form of electricity supplied to homes, offices, and industries worldwide. The frequency of AC, measured in hertz, is 50 Hz in most countries or 60 Hz in others, such as the United States. AC systems offer distinct advantages over DC, particularly in the ease of voltage transformation using transformers, and the efficiency of long-distance power transmission.
