HVAC Concepts and Fundamentals
Course Description
HVAC is an acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, but it is best understood as an integrated system for indoor environmental control. The primary goal of any HVAC system is to maintain thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality for occupants. Heating adds thermal energy to a space to compensate for heat losses through the building envelope-whether through walls, windows, or roofs. Ventilation replaces or mixes indoor air with outdoor air to control contaminants, moisture, and oxygen levels. Air conditioning simultaneously manages temperature, humidity, air cleanliness, and distribution patterns. A well-designed HVAC system balances occupant comfort against energy efficiency and capital costs. Additionally, modern systems manage building pressurization to prevent unwanted infiltration of outdoor air or exfiltration of conditioned air, which can waste energy and cause comfort complaints. HVAC is increasingly integrated with building automation systems for optimized performance. Understanding these fundamentals is essential for engineers, facility managers, and energy auditors alike. This course builds that understanding from the ground up.
