Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) Used in Residential Wall Systems
Course Description
This section introduces the fundamental material science behind Structural Insulated Panels, which is essential knowledge for understanding how SIPs function as both structural elements and thermal insulation in residential wall systems. We will examine the composition of SIPs, including the properties of different foam core materials (EPS, XPS, and PUR/PIR), the role of facing materials (primarily OSB), and the critical adhesive bond that unites these components into a composite structural element. The manufacturing process will be explored, highlighting how factory-controlled conditions, CNC routing, and quality assurance procedures ensure consistent panel performance and tight dimensional tolerances.
