Overview of Insulation Materials
Course Description
Thermal insulation is defined as a material or assembly of materials that significantly reduces the rate of heat transfer between two environments at different temperatures. The primary purpose of thermal insulation is to conserve energy by maintaining desired temperatures in buildings, industrial processes, and transportation systems. Effective insulation also provides secondary benefits such as condensation control, fire protection, acoustic damping, and personnel protection from hot or cold surfaces.
What you'll learn in this course?
Identify at least six major types of thermal insulation materials and their basic chemical composition.
Explain the physical mechanisms of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) as they relate to insulation performance.
Compare key performance metrics including thermal conductivity (k-value), thermal resistance (R-value), and service temperature range.
Select appropriate insulation materials for common engineering applications such as buildings, industrial piping, and HVAC systems.
Recognize critical installation and safety considerations including moisture resistance, fire ratings, and compressive strength.
