Effects of Weathering on the Properties of Vinyl Siding
Course Description
Vinyl siding is primarily composed of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (UPVC or rigid PVC), which provides inherent strength and rigidity without flexible plasticizers. The formulation includes key additives such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) for UV protection, calcium carbonate as a filler, impact modifiers (acrylics or CPE), and pigments for color stability. Weathering effects are not solely due to PVC itself but result from the degradation of these additives and the polymer matrix under environmental stress.
What you'll learn in this course?
Identify the primary chemical and physical components of vinyl siding that are vulnerable to weathering.
Explain the mechanisms by which UV radiation, temperature cycling, and moisture degrade vinyl siding properties.
Distinguish between reversible (elastic) and irreversible (brittle, faded) weathering effects.
Predict changes in impact resistance, color retention, and dimensional stability over a 10–20 year service life.
Apply appropriate material selection and installation strategies to mitigate accelerated weathering.
